Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a prescription injectable treatment used in the submental (double chin) area. The main ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which kills the fat cells where it’s injected. Because the fat cells are completely destroyed, Kybella results are permanent.

How do Kybella injections work?

First, Dr. Hanson numbs your entire double chin area with a powerful topical anesthetic. After 10-20 minutes, your skin feels numb to the touch and you're ready for the injections.

Dr. Hanson marks the treatment areas precisely, and then follows that pattern to inject two vials of Kybella. The treatment consists of many small injections, one after another, to ensure that all of the target fat cells are covered. Kybella treatment typically takes just 30-60 minutes.

How many Kybella treatment sessions do I need?

Most patients need a minimum of two treatment sessions, and you may need up to six treatment sessions if you have a significant amount of fat in the under chin area. Your second treatment session typically occurs one month after the first. If you need further treatments, those are scheduled at the same interval.

Is any downtime needed after Kybella?

No, it's a quick and easy procedure that requires no downtime. You may experience some swelling, minimal bruising, and redness in the injection area, but those effects usually last for only a few days. You can apply concealer to the treatment area to hide any redness if you choose.

You may experience mild to moderate discomfort after the Kybella procedure as the deoxycholic acid kills fat cells. Dr. Hanson may recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever or ice compresses for pain relief.

When will I see Kybella results?

Kybella isn't instantaneous because it takes your immune system some time to move the fat out of your body through urination. However, most patients see results quickly after their second treatment. Some patients may see results a couple of weeks after their initial Kybella treatment session.

Is Kybella permanent?

Since Kybella kills fat cells, it's classified as a permanent treatment. You shouldn't have to deal with a double chin ever again after Kybella treatment. However, you should maintain your weight carefully to prevent expansion of the untreated fat cells in and around your chin and neck.
